Outdoor living spaces are rapidly gaining popularity in southern California. They are an extension of your home’s overall living space and a relaxing area where you can connect with nature. However, designing the ideal outdoor living space may prove challenging, especially if you have no background in yard design and architecture. If you are thinking of designing a functional outdoor space within your home, here are some ideas on how to get started.

1. Define the Living Space

You may buy the best outdoor furniture for your outdoor living space, but if it is not set right, the area will end up looking disorganized and disjointed. It is, therefore, essential to define a space depending on your yard design where you will set up your outdoor space. You can either do this by applying one of the various floor types for outdoor areas or placing potted plants around the patio to separate it from the other parts of your yard.

2. Choose the Right Furniture.

The type of furniture that you choose for your outdoor living space is determined by the purpose for which it is intended. If you want to create it for lounging, treading, and conversation area, consider adding love seats and coffee tables, or chairs with functional end tables. If your purpose is to have an outdoor dining and entertainment area, consider adding a stylish outdoor dinette set.

3. Light It Up

One of the critical factors to consider while creating the ideal outdoor space is whether it can accommodate you and your loved ones at all times of the day, including when natural light isn’t available. The best way to achieve this is by adding a lighting source for evening hours. If there isn’t an electricity source that is readily available outside the house, you can add a solar-powered light to create a pleasant ambiance with little hassle.

4. Plan for the Weather

It is essential to remember that your outdoor space is susceptible to all types of weather, including wind, rain, sunshine, and even snow. The furniture and décor that you select for this space must be able to withstand all these weather conditions that are present in southern California. Ensure that you purchase items that are specifically designed for the outdoors rather than using some of your indoor furniture. This way, you can remain at peace even when a sudden weather change occurs when you are not around the house.

5. Soften the Outdoor Living Space

Just like you would with any other space within the house, you aim to create a relaxing and inviting atmosphere within your outdoor space. You can achieve this by accessorizing with items such as throw pillows and rugs to add a cozy feel to the outdoor space. Ensure that your items remain fresh and clean by swapping them out every once in a while. You can also add a zen-like water feature and potted plants to bring a natural feel to the outdoor space.

With the right furniture and accessories, an outdoor space can become as comfortable and enjoyable as any other room within the house.
